1月に神保町のBook & Zine フェスへ行ってきました。今回は本の街として親しまれている神保町でのイベントの感想になります。

神保町はあの世界的ベストセラーである「コーヒーが冷めないうちに」にも登場する街です。そして本の街として親しまれています。ここに約130の古本屋があると聞いた時は驚きでした。
今回は、Book＆Zine Festivalをじっくりと見て回ってきました。正直なところ、Zineは聞きなじみがなかったが、手作りの冊子を作ることをZine(ジン)と呼び、日本でも近年人気になっていると知ったのです。
どんなZineがあるのか見てみたいと思いました。こういったイベントのいいところは、作り手と購入者で直接やり取りができることです。実際に、数人の作者さんにどういった経緯でZineを作ったのか、こだわっているポイントを話してもらいました。自分だったらどんなZineを作るだろうか？と想像してワクワクする場所でした！
面白いものは、3書店コラボによるGinのお酒です。神保町の【神】にちなんでGinのお酒を造られたそう。店員さん曰く、ジュニパーの香りが強くなく、トニックウォーターとレモンシロップまたはオレンジジュースで割って飲むんだそうです。確かに、オーソドックスなジンよりもさわやかであっさりとした味になっていました。このお酒が生まれた背景としては神保町が盛り上がるようにとのこと。ぜひとも変わらず本の街として残ってほしいと本好きの一人として思います。

Jimbo-cho is the town immortalized in the ingenious global bestseller, “Before the Coffee Gets Cold”. To my astonishment, this beloved town is home to 130 second-hand bookstores frequented by avid book lovers.
For this particular visit, I perused the Book & Zine Festival. To be truthful, I was not the slightest bit familiar with the term “zine;” nevertheless, I soon learned that handmade booklets are called zines and have notable popularity in Japan in recent years.
I was quite curious to discover the variety of zines on display. What distinguishes events like this is the rare opportunity for direct dialogue between creators and readers. I had the pleasure of speaking with several authors about their motivations for producing zines and the themes they pursue with such evident passion. It was an invigorating experience—one that prompted me to wonder, “What kind of zine would I create?”
A unique find was a gin collaboration by three local bookstores. The spirit was crafted with a nod to Jimbo-cho’s “Jin”. According to the staff, it has a more subtle juniper aroma and is meant to be mixed with tonic water and lemon syrup or orange juice. Indeed, it has a fresher, lighter taste than classic gin. This spirit’s creation was to nurture an enduring love and reverence for Jimbo-cho’s books and reading culture. As a book lover myself, I wholeheartedly hope it remains a town of treasured books, revered and unchanged.
