トロントに訪れてから１年以上、洋書を読み続けています。今では、様々な英語学習方法がありますが、私自身は洋書を読むことが楽しんで学ぶことができ、かつ効果的な方法だと感じています。今回はその洋書を継続し読み続けている結果、どんな効果があるのかについて書きました。

　「自分に厳しくしすぎないで」これはESLの先生からの言葉で、私がどうやって英語を改善していくのかについて尋ねたときでした。流暢に話せてネイティブの会話が理解できるようになるのに、どれくらいの時間がかかるのかと考えていました。当時は日本にいる間に、オンライン英語で学んでいたにもか関わらず、それは長い時間がかかるように感じました。しかし今日では、オンライン英語アプリは直感的に使いやすく、自分の必要なレベルに合わせられます。自分自身の課題を振り返ると、この1年の間洋書を読み続けることが、はるかに効果的な学習方法だとわかりました。読書は私に「楽しむこと」、「推測する力」、「理解力の速さ」という3つの重要な分野で役立っています。

　はじめに、もしあなたが英語学習を楽しんでいないなら、モチベーションを無くし、もう止めたいと思うでしょう。だから好奇心を刺激し継続できるように、あなたが興味のある本を選ぶことが不可欠なのです。もしあなたが継続的に学習を続けたいなら、楽しみながら学ぶことが重要です。私の場合は洋書の、特にフィクションのストーリーが想像でなかったため、当初はうまくいきませんでした。この留学中に、手に取った最初の洋書は難しすぎて、私の英語レベルに合っていませんでした。結果、ほかの洋書を探し、翻訳本を選びました。翻訳本はときどき原書とは違う表現をされていますが、私はすでにそのストーリーを知っていたので、英語でも理解しやすかったです。ここで大切なのは、ストレスなく読み続けることです。できるだけ長くその課程を楽しむことで、楽しく続けられるでしょう。

　さらに、洋書を読むことの極めて重要なメリットとして、あなたの推測力を鍛えてくれます。個人的に私はフィクションが好きなので、ストーリーの中のシーンを想像しながら読みます。トロントに訪れてから洋書を1年以上読んでいますが、大切なことに気が付きました。最初は、知らない単語に出くわすと難しいと感じていましたが、時間が経つにつれて、それらの意味を文脈から推測することを学びました。ほとんどの英語学習者が一語一句の意味を理解しようとしますが、これでは力尽きてしまいます。一方で、文脈を読むことによって、より楽しくプレッシャーが減るプロセスを見つけています。さらに、Audibleのような機能を持つLibbyアプリを使うことで、ドイツやフランス、アイリッシュの様々な英語アクセントを聞くことができます。たとえ単語を知らなくても、声色からそれらの意味を推測します。読み進めることによって、速さも同様に改善されました。オーディオブックの速さに慣れると、理解力も上がりました。過去に、300ページほど洋書を読み切るのに1年かかったこともあります。ですが今はそのような本は2カ月以内に読み終わります。聞く速さも変えることで、早く読めるようになりました。一語一句の意味が分からなかったとしても、それでも読書は効果的に全体の意味を掴むことができます。

　まとめとして、最も効果的な英語学習方法は読書です。それによって、ただ楽しいだけでなく、あなたの推測力を改善し、理解力の向上に繋がるでしょう。

“Don’t be too hard on yourself.” These words were spoken by one of the ESL teachers when I asked how to improve my English skills. I was curious about how long it would take to speak fluently and understand native speakers. At that time, it felt as if it was taking too long, despite my best in an online English class in Japan. However, nowadays, online English applications are highly intuitive and adapt to your needs your level. After reflecting on my own challenges, I have found that reading English books for a year has been the most effective method for me by far. This is because I enjoy reading, and it is a stress-free way to learn. Reading English books has helped me in three important area: enjoyment, inference skills, and faster comprehension.

Firstly, if you do not enjoy learning English, you eventually lose motivation and feel like giving up. Therefore, choosing books that interest you is essential, as it sparks curiosity and keeps you engaged. Learning with joy is crucial if you want to continue your studies consistently. In my case, I struggled initially because I could not imagine the stories in English books, especially when it came to fiction. The first book I tried was too difficult and did not match my level. Consequently, I looked for another book that I could relate to and ended up choosing a translated book, which had originally been written in Japanese. Although translated books sometimes use expressions that differ from the original, they were easier to understand because I was already familiar with the story. The key point here is to keep reading without stress. As long as you enjoy the process, you are happy to continue.

Furthermore, one significant benefit of reading books is that it helps you develop inference skills. Personally, I prefer reading fiction because it allows me to use my imagination to visualize the story. Since I arrived in Toronto, I have been reading English books for over a year, and I have noticed significant improvements. Initially, I struggle with unfamiliar words, but over time, I have learned to infer their meaning from the context. Many people focus on understanding every single word, but this is exhausting. On the other hand, by reading with a focus on context, I find the process more enjoyable and less overwhelming. Additionally, I use the Libby app (similar to Audible), which allows me to listen to a variety of English accents, such as French, German, and Irish. Even if I do not know some words, I can often guess their meaning based on the tone of voice, which further supports my listening and comprehension skills. As I continued reading, my reading speed improved as well. When I adjusted the speed of the audiobooks, my comprehension also increased. In the past, it would take me a year to finish 300page book. However, now I finish such a book in about two months. By changing the speed while listening to audiobooks, I have been able to read faster. Even if I do not understand every single word, I still grasp the overall meaning, which greatly enhances my reading efficiency.

In conclusion, the most effective way to learn English is to read books. By doing so, you not only gain enjoyment but also greatly improve your inference skills and enhance your comprehension ability.
