英文エッセイ第３回目。今回は英語学習者ならおそらく誰もが考える「正確さ」と「流暢さ」のお話です。英会話にてゆっくりだけど、文法や単語は正確に話す。またはスラスラ話せるけど、文法や単語はところどころ間違えている。あなたならどちらを重視しますか？ 今回はコミュニケーションという点を含めて、私が大事にしていることを書きました。

あなたは英語を話すときに、プレッシャーを感じますか？ 友達と英会話中に、彼女は「頭の中で、英語を話すときに文法とか正しい言葉遣いや発音とか、たくさんのことを考えなきゃいけないわ…」これは英語を学ぶ誰もが持つ共通の悩みです。わたしは、ほとんどの英語学習者は自分の言いたいことよりも正確さを重要視しているように感じます。また、一定の人たちは誰かのミスを指摘します。人によっては、気まずさを覚えるでしょう。わたしの経験として、初めは英語を流暢に話すことに重点を置き、今は会話の中でミスを減らすことを試みています。その理由は、誰もが間違えることはあるし、状況に寄るため、そして完璧さを求めないからです。
もしあなたが英会話中に誰かのミスを指摘すれば、指摘された人は黙ってしまうかもしれません。恥ずかしさを感じ、発言することが怖くなって、ためらうようになるでしょう。ミスを指摘する人はただ無意識に、または良かれと思って彼らの英語を直すのです。しかし、人生で一度もミスなく生きてきた人がいるでしょうか？ 誰もが間違うことがあるのです。コミュニケーションという観点から、わたしは会話中に文法的な間違いとか、発音の正しさを気にしていません。なぜならその会話は、英語の授業でもないし、わたしは彼らの先生でもありません。ただ友達と会話を通してその時間を楽しんでいるだけです。それに友達と私は同じ国籍でもない。ときどき、似たような文化や慣習があるけれど、違いもあります。そうして一般的に礼儀正しく、尊重し、親しく振舞うことが、わたしが英会話サークルの主催者から学んだことなのです。その方はわたしにとにかく練習すること、そして会話の中で自分の気持ちを表現するのだと教えてくれました。
一方で、もしあなたが言語を正確に理解したいなら、言語の基礎として、必ず文法や語彙を学ぶ必要があります。実際に、ネイティブにときどき自分の言いたいことを表現できていません。でも、わたしが言いたいことや彼らの発言から理解したことを説明します。さらに英語のレベルを上げる必要があるのです。例えば、ネイティブであろうとなかろうと、友達と話すときは、文脈の中での言葉を慎重に選ぶようにします。もし簡単な言葉ばかりを長期間使っていれば、英語スキルを改善することはできないし、語彙力もつかないでしょう。だから違う言葉を使って言い換えをするようにしています。他にも様々な状況で、ネイティブスピーカーが使う言葉を注意深く聞いています。たまに日本語と英語の間で、言葉の意味やニュアンスが違うこともあるため、ややこしいと感じることもあります。けれど会話を通して、それらを知るチャンスがあるので、私にとって役に立っています。そうして英語で正確さを学べば、誤解を減らすことができるでしょう。
私が英語を話すときに正確さか流暢さを重視するのは、状況にもよります。英語学習を通して、様々な状況下で友人はわたしに意見を聞いてきます。それでもし、わたしが何も言わなければ、彼らがわたしを理解することは難しいでしょう。彼らが私のミスを気にしているように思いませんし、英語が母国語でないことも知っています。だから私は文法や発音を100％完璧に答えるということに拘っていません。
もちろん、ビジネスでは正確さが必要でしょう。なぜなら会議のような限られた時間で発言が求められることもあります。もし私が何度も間違えれば、彼らは私と一緒に働くことに懸念を感じるでしょう。円滑なコミュニケーションのために、しばしば間を空けすぎないようにシンプルな言葉を使い、そして理解しているのか、していないのかを確認します。これは英語力向上のためです。それぞれの状況で、今は正確さか流暢さのどちらに焦点を当てるのかを考慮します。しかし私にとって大事なことは、どちらの状況でも自分の意見を彼らと共有し、コミュニケーションを取ることなのです。
まとめとして、英語を学ぶためにはやるべきことが沢山あります。わたしは最初に英語を流暢に話すことに集中しました。それは誰もがミスをすること、完全さを求めないこと、状況に寄るということを理解しているからです。

Are you overwhelmed when speaking English? In a conversation with a friend, she said: “In my brain, when I speak English, I should think a lot about things like grammar, the right word in the context, and pronunciation etc….” This is one of the common struggles for someone who is speaking English. I feel like most people who learn English as a second language focus on accuracy more than on what they want to say. Also, some people correct others’ mistakes when they say something. It depends on the person, but that makes them feel awkward. In my experience, I focused on speaking English fluently first, and now I’m trying making less mistakes when I have a conversation. The reasons are that everyone makes mistakes, and depending on the situation not focusing on perfection.
If you correct someone’s mistake who speaks English, they will stop speaking. Because they feel embarrassed and afraid of say something, they will feel hesitant. I mean the person who corrects your English just might have good intentions or unconsciously being doing this. However, is there anyone who has never made a mistake in life? Everyone makes mistake sometimes. As a point of communication, I do not care about mistakes like grammatical or incorrect pronunciation while we are talking. Because the conversation is not an English class, and I’m not a teacher for them. I just enjoy the time with my friends through conversation. Also, my friend and I are not from the same countries. Sometimes, we have similar cultures and customs, but we also have differences. Therefore, I usually behave politely, respectfully, and friendly which I learned from one organizer in my English conversation circle. The organizer told me to just practice and describe what you feel in the conversation.
On the other hand, if you want to understand language accurately, you definitely need to learn grammar and vocabulary to learn the basics of language. Actually, sometimes I cannot convey to native speakers what I’m trying to say. However, I keep trying to explain my feelings and comprehend what they say. Additionally, I need to step up my English level. For example, whether they are natives or not, I try to choose words carefully in context when I talk with my friends. If I use only simple words for a long time, I will not be able to improve my English skills. It also cannot expand my vocabulary range. Therefore, I try to say it in different way by paraphrasing. Besides, I listen to that native speakers describe words in multiple situations. Sometimes, the words between Japanese and English have different meanings or nuance, so it is complicated for me. Through the conversation, I have a chance to know that, and it is useful for me. Therefore, I can make less miscommunication if I study accuracy in English.
It depends on the situation when I focus on fluency or accuracy in English. Through studying and speaking English, my friends want to know what my opinions are in multiple situations. Then, if I do not say anything, it is going to be difficult to comprehend me for them. I think they do not care about my mistakes in a conversation, and they know English is not my mother tongue. So, I do not obsess over to answer 100percent correct as grammatical or accurate pronunciation.
On the other hand, business needs accuracy because sometimes I have to say something quickly in limited time like at a meeting. If I make many mistakes, they will feel insecure to work with me. For Smooth communication, I often use simple words without pause and make sure if I understand or not in order to keep practicing to improve my English skills. Each situation, I now consider which I need to focus on, fluency or accuracy, but what is important to me is to communicate with them by sharing my opinions in either situation.
In conclusion, there are many things to focus on to learn language. I concentrated on speaking English fluently at first because I know that everyone makes mistake, not focusing on perfection, and recognizing situation.
